When you’re an aspiring medical practitioner, one of the basic things you have to learn in nursing education in Lanham, Maryland, is knowing what to do when seeing an unconscious person. Unconsciousness is an unresponsive state in which a person is unable to respond to people and activities for a few seconds or longer. There are a lot of reasons why a person is unable to respond. It may be due to nearly any major illness or injury, overdose in substance (drug) and alcohol use, dehydration, low blood sugar, or temporary low blood pressure.
Every healthcare academy teaches practitioners to do the following steps when doing a first-aid. So, if you see a person who has become unconscious, first check whether they’re breathing. If they’re not breathing, you should:
- Shout for help and call local emergency services immediately.
- Check for a response, but do not feel or listen for breathing by placing your ear and cheek close to the patient’s mouth.
- During this time of the pandemic, it is recommended that you don’t perform rescue breaths or mouth-to-mouth CPR. Only perform chest compressions.
- If there is a possible risk of infection, place a cloth over the patient’s mouth and nose. And if possible, always wear personal protective equipment like a mask, gloves, or eye protection.
- After performing compression-only CPR, don’t forget to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least twenty seconds or use alcohol or sanitizer to disinfect.
